Privacy Policy
Your data, handled with restraint.
This policy describes how FreedomRankings (“we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use freedomrankings.com (the “Site”). We collect as little as the Site needs to work, we never sell it, and you can delete it. By using the Site you agree to the practices described here.

Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address, a hashed copy of your password (we never store passwords in plaintext), and your display name if you provide one.
- Communication. If you email us we keep a record of the correspondence to help us answer your question.
Information collected automatically
- Server logs. Our hosting provider records request metadata (IP address, user-agent, requested URL, timestamp). These logs are retained for a short period for security and debugging.
- Cookies. We use cookies to keep you signed in (session cookies) and to remember preferences (theme, ranking-source selection). We also use Google Analytics 4 to measure traffic and usage. Analytics and advertising cookies are governed by Google Consent Mode: they stay off until you accept in the cookie banner. If you decline, Google Analytics runs in a cookieless mode and ads are non-personalized.
How we use information
- Provide and maintain the Site, including signing you in.
- Send transactional email related to your account (password resets, notification preferences).
- Detect and prevent abuse and security incidents.
- Measure aggregate Site usage and performance through Google Analytics (see “Analytics” below).
Advertising and affiliate links
We do not serve display advertising. The Site runs no ad network, no ad tags, and no advertising cookies of any kind.
Some pages — principally the calculators under /tools — carry affiliate links, labelled “Sponsored” where they appear. These are ordinary links: following one takes you to the merchant, who may pay us a commission if you buy. We do not set a tracking cookie for them, and we do not pass anything you entered into a calculator — income, home value, ZIP code, permits — to the merchant. The only thing sent is which tool you came from. Whatever happens after you land on their site is governed by their privacy policy, not ours.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (gtag.js) to understand aggregate Site usage — which pages are viewed, how visitors navigate, and which features are used. Google Analytics may set cookies and process usage data (including a truncated IP address) on our behalf. We enable Google Consent Mode v2, so analytics and advertising storage remain denied until you accept in the cookie banner; if you decline, Google Analytics collects only cookieless, aggregated measurement. You can learn more in Google's Privacy Policy. We do not use any other third-party analytics or tracking services beyond what is described in this policy. If that changes we will update this policy.
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in these limited cases:
- Service providers who help us run the Site (hosting, database, email delivery, image storage, advertising). They process information on our behalf under contractual obligations.
- Legal requirements if we are required to disclose information to comply with a law, court order, or valid government request.
Data retention
We retain account information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from your profile settings; once deleted, your personal information is removed from our systems within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or audit purposes.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Delete your personal information.
- Opt out of personalized advertising (see “Advertising and third-party cookies” above).
- For California residents, the rights described in the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
- For residents of the EU/UK, the rights described in the GDPR.
To exercise any of these rights, email support@freedomrankings.com.
Children
FreedomRankings is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information (encryption in transit via HTTPS, encryption at rest at our database provider, salted password hashes). No service can guarantee absolute security; please use a strong, unique password.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced via an in-app notice or email to registered users.
