Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of FreedomRankings ("we", "us", or "our") and the website at freedomrankings.com(the "Site"). By accessing or using the Site you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

1. What FreedomRankings is

FreedomRankings is an informational and educational resource. We score all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, and 197 countries across ten freedom categories by aggregating data from named third-party indexes and public records, and we publish explainers, comparisons, and profiles built on that data. The Site is free to read; optional paid tiers unlock additional data, exports, and features (see Pricing).

2. Not professional advice

The scores, rankings, integrity assessments, approval estimates, policy positions, and all other content on the Site are provided for general informational purposes only. They are not legal, financial, tax, political, relocation, or any other form of professional advice, and they should not be relied on as such. Rankings reflect a blend of third-party data and our editorial methodology; reasonable people weigh these freedoms differently. Always consult a qualified professional before making decisions that depend on this information. See our Methodology for exactly how scores are calculated and sourced.

3. Accounts

Some features require an account. You agree to provide accurate information, to keep your password secure, and to be responsible for all activity under your account. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. You may delete your account at any time from your profile settings; we handle your information as described in our Privacy Policy.

4. Subscriptions and billing

  • Paid tiers are billed in advance on a recurring basis until you cancel. Prices and included features are described on the Pricing page and may change with notice.
  • You can cancel at any time from your account; cancellation stops future renewals and your paid features remain active through the end of the current billing period.
  • Except where required by law, payments are non-refundable. If you believe you were charged in error, contact support@freedomrankings.com.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Scrape, harvest, or bulk-download Site content except through features we provide for that purpose (e.g. exports on paid tiers), or in a manner that places an unreasonable load on our infrastructure.
  • Resell, redistribute, or republish substantial portions of the Site's data or content as your own product.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Site, other accounts, or our systems, or interfere with the Site's normal operation.
  • Use the Site to harass any individual, including the public officials profiled on it, or for any unlawful purpose.
  • Misrepresent the Site's editorial estimates (such as integrity scores or approval estimates) as verified fact.

6. Intellectual property

The Site's original content — including our category framework, scoring methodology, written explainers, comparisons, and the compilation and arrangement of data — is owned by FreedomRankings and protected by intellectual-property laws. The underlying facts, government records, and third-party index values are not ours and remain attributable to their sources. You may share links to the Site and quote brief excerpts with attribution; any other reuse of our original content requires our permission. Where we offer an embeddable badge or similar tool, you may use it according to the instructions provided.

7. Third-party data and links

Scores are derived from third-party sources including the Fraser Institute, Freedom House, V-Dem, the World Justice Project, EdChoice, the Institute for Justice, the Cato Institute, Congress.gov, FEC.gov, and others named throughout the Site. We do not control those sources and are not responsible for their accuracy or availability. The Site also links to external websites that we do not operate or endorse; following those links is at your own risk.

8. Advertising

The Site is supported in part by advertising, including ads served through Google AdSense and its partners. Advertisements and any third-party offers are the responsibility of the advertiser, not FreedomRankings. How advertising cookies are handled is described in our Privacy Policy.

9. Disclaimers

The Site is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any score, ranking, or data point is complete, current, or accurate. Data is synced periodically from external sources and may lag or contain errors originating upstream.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, FreedomRankings and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your use of or reliance on the Site or its content. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you for any claim relating to the Site is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or USD $100.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold FreedomRankings harmless from any claims, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your misuse of the Site or your violation of these Terms.

12. Changes to the Site and these Terms

We may add, change, or discontinue features at any time. We may also update these Terms from time to time; the "Last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced via an in-app notice or email to registered users, and your continued use of the Site after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

13. Termination

You may stop using the Site at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms or use the Site in a way that could harm us, other users, or the public officials profiled on it.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which we operate, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the courts located there, unless applicable consumer-protection law gives you the right to bring a claim elsewhere.
